The Surprising Benefits of Grounding Yourself to Earth for Better Health

How A Grounding Mat Can Help When It’s Too Cold

⚠️ If you charge your phone without a grounded source, you can get shocked when you touch it. We humans are also electrically charged, yet we rarely ground ourselves by touching the Earth. This can leave us stressed and in pain at the cellular level.

That’s where “grounding” can help. 


Grounding is a way of making direct skin contact with the Earth’s surface, either by walking barefoot on ground or water, or by using a grounding mat connected to a grounded outlet.

I love walking barefoot, but in the Midwest there’s lots of cold days. Luckily, there’s a way to ground inside using a grounding mat – and it’s already helped tremendously!

What does modern science say about grounding?

It’s fascinating that our beloved Earth carries negative electrical charges that can actually balance the positive charges in our bodies. Positively charged ions are known as “free radicals,” which create an electrical imbalance, “stealing” electrons from healthy cells to neutralize their own charge, causing cellular damage.

By connecting to the Earth’s charge, we can neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation, which is associated with many chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.


Result of Studies of Grounding, or Earthing

One of the earliest studies of grounding was published in 2010 by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Researchers measured the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, in participants who slept on grounded sheets for eight weeks. They found that grounding reduced cortisol levels and improved sleep quality. Another study published in the same journal in 2012 found that grounding reduced pain and improved sleep in participants with chronic pain.

In 2015, a pilot study published in the Journal of Inflammation Research showed that grounding reduced markers of inflammation in the blood of healthy adults. The participants walked barefoot on grass for one hour while their blood was monitored before and after the session. The results showed a significant decrease in inflammation after grounding.

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that grounding reduced pain, stiffness, and fatigue in participants with fibromyalgia. Another study published in the Journal of Diabetes Research in 2017 showed that grounding reduced blood sugar levels and improved insulin sensitivity in participants with type 2 diabetes.

As the research is still somewhat early, grounding isn’t meant to replace other treatments, but instead complement overall wellness at a level it is often ignore: our energy, or Qi. ✨


But How Can I Ground When It’s Cold?

Cold and rainy days are when grounding mats can save the day. I recently tried my first, and so far I love it as it gave me a beautiful rest and I awoke feeling more clear than I normally do early morning. I highly recommend one if you are not able to connect with Earth often.
