Healing Doesn’t Require Understanding: The Power of Presence in Qigong

A woman once asked me if she could do qigong for her mother. Her mother was elderly and could no longer move much on her own. She knew qigong as a powerful form of energy work that helps restore smooth, natural flow in the body, but she wasn’t sure if it could still be effective in this situation.

She also asked about her son, who is on the autism spectrum. Her question was simple and deeply honest: if they couldn’t fully participate or understand what was happening, would it still help?

I love this question because it opens a door to something many people don’t realize. The answer is yes, it still helps. Healing does not require perfect understanding or precise execution. It requires presence. Care. Intention.

When you gently pat your mother’s arms or guide your child’s hands, you are not just moving skin and muscle. You are activating pathways of energy that the body already knows. In qigong, we often say that the body remembers even when the mind forgets. Touch carries meaning. Rhythm brings calm. Energy naturally flows where attention goes, and attention itself is powerful.

Even if someone cannot join in fully or intellectually grasp what is happening, the body still responds. Their Qi still stirs. Love lands. In that sense, you become the medicine. You become a calming signal in their nervous system, a steady presence their body can trust.

Yes, you can absolutely do this for them.
