Joe’s Cold and Flu Remedies (special section)

I put this together because I just don’t find these tips out there enough, and they’ve helped me countless times over the years. – Joe

This is “nuke-level” stuff (metaphorically speaking) so go easy at first and see what works for you.

🍃 Tea Tree Oil infused Steam

Why it works: Tea tree oil contains terpinen-4-ol, a compound known for antiviral, antibacterial, and decongestant properties. It kills airborne viruses and soothes inflamed airways.

  • Boil about 1 cup of water.
  • Add 8-11 drops of tea tree oil (avoid overuse—it’s potent!).
  • Inhale deeply but gently—go in slowly–don’t directly inhale the steam if it’s too strong.

🍃 Mullein Tincture & Loose-Leaf Tea

Why it works: Mullein is a powerful herb known for its ability to soothe respiratory issues, clear mucus, and support lung health. It acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen and expel congestion.

  • Mullein Tincture: Take a few drops directly, or more in water or tea to help with coughs and lung irritation.
  • Mullein Loose-Leaf Tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried mullein leaves in hot water for 10-15 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh to remove tiny leaf hairs before drinking.
  • Best used for chest congestion, lingering coughs, and overall lung support and cold prevention.

🧄 Garlic

Why it works: Garlic is a potent natural antiviral with different benefits depending on how it’s consumed.

  • Raw Garlic: Contains allicin, a sulfur compound that fights viruses and bacteria. Best when crushed and eaten fresh.
  • Cooked Garlic: While heating reduces some allicin, it still provides immune-boosting sulfur compounds and is easier on the stomach.
  • Best Method: Crush garlic, let it sit for 10-15 minutes before consuming raw, or add it to soups and other dishes for milder benefits.
  • Pro Tip: Saute garlic in olive oil then consume as they two are said to have a “magical” synergy for healing.

👂 Hydrogen Peroxide Drops in the Ear

Why it works: Viruses often enter through the ears, and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) oxidizes and destroys them before they spread.

  • Lie on your side.
  • Drop a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide into your ear.
  • Let it fizz for about 5 minutes, then drain and repeat on the other side.
  • Be sure to dry your outer skin and ear to avoid any irritation.

🌶️ Hot Peppers & Spicy Foods

Why it works: Spicy foods contain capsaicin, a compound that acts as a natural decongestant, helping to break up mucus, clear sinuses, and boost circulation.

  • Clears Sinuses: Heat stimulates the nasal passages, reducing congestion.
  • Thins Mucus: Helps loosen and expel mucus from the throat and lungs.
  • Boosts Immune Response: Increases circulation, helping immune cells travel faster.
  • Releases Endorphins: Provides temporary relief from cold symptoms by making you feel better.

🍏 Apples and Peanut Butter

Why it works: Apples are rich in quercetin, a natural antihistamine that helps reduce inflammation. Peanut butter provides healthy fats and protein, which stabilize blood sugar and keep energy levels up during recovery.

  • Slice up fresh apples.
  • Spread with natural peanut butter (avoid added sugars).
  • Eat as a nutrient-packed snack.

💆 Face Massager for Sinus Relief

Why it works: Vibrations increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage, helping clear sinuses.

  • Use a vibrating massager on your cheeks, nose, and forehead.
  • Massage in circular motions around sinus cavities.

🌿 Echinacea Tincture & Capsules

Why it works: Echinacea is an immune-boosting herb that has been shown to help reduce the severity and duration of colds by stimulating white blood cell production.

  • Echinacea Tincture: Take a few drops directly. For more, take 30-50 drops in water or tea up to 3 times a day at the first sign of a cold.
  • Echinacea Capsules: Follow dosage instructions on the bottle, typically 300-500mg 2-3 times daily.
  • Best taken at the first sign of illness for maximum effect.

🌬️ Steam Inhalation with Garlic

Why it works: The steam opens nasal passages, while garlic releases allicin, a powerful antimicrobial compound that fights viruses.

  • Chop up fresh garlic into small pieces and let it sit for 15 minutes to activate allicin.
  • Boil water and add the garlic.
  • Inhale deeply for a few minutes with care not to get close to the hottest steam.

🫙 Neti Pot Nasal Cleanse

Why it works: A Neti Pot helps clear mucus, bacteria, and viruses from the nasal passages, preventing infections from taking hold. Adding garlic enhances its antimicrobial effects.

  • A Neti Pot is a small teapot-like device used to flush out nasal passages with a sterile saline solution.
  • It removes allergens, bacteria, and excess mucus while keeping nasal tissues hydrated.
  • How to super-charge it with garlic:
    • Chop fresh garlic and let it sit for 15 minutes.
    • Boil water, add the garlic, and let it cool completely.
    • Strain out the garlic pieces and mix the garlic-infused water with sterile saline.
    • Lean over a sink and gently pour the solution through one nostril, letting it drain from the other. Repeat for the other side.

🦴 Chicken Broth

Why it works: Chicken broth contains cysteine, an amino acid that thins mucus and reduces inflammation, plus essential minerals for immune support.

  • Use homemade or high-quality store-bought broth.
  • Add garlic, ginger, turmeric, or cayenne for extra benefits.

💊 Zinc Lozenges

Why it works: Zinc blocks viral replication in the throat and nasal passages.

  • Take zinc acetate or zinc gluconate lozenges at the first sign of symptoms.
  • Allow the lozenge to dissolve slowly in your mouth.
  • ⚠️ Avoid taking on an empty stomach to prevent nausea, and use moderately.

🔥 Warm/Hot Shower to Face

Why it works: The steam loosens mucus, opens airways, and helps kill viruses through mild heat exposure.

  • Take a long hot shower, letting steam fill the bathroom.
  • Lean into the hot water and breathe deeply.
  • Use eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils for added relief.

🌳 Get Outside, Breathe, and Touch a Tree

Why it works: Fresh air oxygenates your blood, and touching trees can ground you, reducing stress and boosting immune function.

  • Go outside for at least 10-15 minutes, even if it’s cold.
  • Breathe deeply through your nose to clear your lungs.
  • Touch a tree and connect with nature to reduce stress hormones.

🦶 Footbath for Detox & Warmth

Why it works: A warm footbath improves circulation, helping your immune system work more efficiently.

  • Fill a basin with warm water.
  • Soak feet for 20 minutes, then dry and put on warm socks.
  • Optional: Add Epsom salt, mustard powder, or ginger powder.
